How Do Grain Silos Work?

Grain silos are designed in a range of shapes and sizes with different structures and designs to support the processes of a farm and to store grain for future use or to sell. Our silos guarantee a long service life as they’re high-quality glass reinforced composites. We ensure our silos that store food products like grain are resistant to moisture and prevent contamination. As most farmers are concerned with the quality of their grain over time, it’s important to ensure your silos have the correct outflow properties and are resistant to the ever-changing environment. So how does grain silos work once it’s installed?

Auger Loading System

A commonly used machine called an auger is used to move gain into an empty silo. This is a cheaper method to implement however it can be difficult to operate as the large tube of metal is attached to a tractor and can create challenges to align the position of the tractor over the silo opening with the auger opening, which can sometimes be a hazard depending on the location of the silo. Overall, with the right resources an auger can effectively load the grain into a silo to be stored for future use.

Bucket Loader System

Another loading system is a bucket loader which is attached to a tractor. This loading method is more expensive and operates by moving the grain up vertically in a bucket. This vertical elevator is used to pull up the grain which is then put into a fixed tube connected to the tractor. With electronical controls, this method is safer and faster to load the grain into silos due to the multiple legs in the loading system that can be installed into the silos.

Unloading System

After the silo is loaded and the grain has been stored for a certain period, the grain can transport to a new location with augers. This process is easier than the loading process as there are openings near the bottom of the silo that can be opened to realise the gain. The grain simply falls out (with natural gravity) and into a storage vehicle or facility. When releasing the grain, it’s vital to let the grain flow naturally from the silo to manage the amount of grain being released.

Silo Quality

It’s important to ensure your silo is stable and supported with the correct structures otherwise it can cause large amounts of grain to overflow at the opening or even cause the grain to get congested. Farmers use silos to store grain as it required special storage to maximise grain storage life and preserve for future use. Silos are the best solution for post-harvest management and are a long-term investment that’s affordable and durable for large quantities of grain.

Most farmers will always use the same method to load grain into silos and unload grain from silos. Both methods are effective and it’s imperative to have a high-quality silo that is robust and durable whilst being able to work seamlessly with the loading and unloading systems. At Silostore, our experienced team can help you find the best silo solutions for your desired location and to meet your requirements.
